Counselling
for individuals, women, couples and families
Some of the reasons people seek counselling are to increase self
worth and self-esteem, to sort out mixed feelings, to build healthy
relationships, name the crazy making stuff, and to feel more fulfilled.
Trauma – this includes
childhood trauma / abuse, which includes emotional abuse; physical & sexual
assault; relationship abuse; and critical incidents.
Healing from abuse can take a number of different forms. Counselling
is an invitation to honor how you survived. Explore your “blue
print” (how you are now in relationships/work) and what
unique attributes you have.
Traumatic critical incidents' can include witnessing assault /
abuse or being threatened; witnessing or experiencing an accident;
being kidnapped, held against ones will, surgery and hospitalizations,
sexual exploitation, dealing with a traumatic death, and any event
that causes extreme emotional distress.
Counselling can help deal with traumatic symptoms resulting from
traumatic events.
Relationships –
wanting to create a healthy relationship, deal with a break-up or
divorce, address unhappiness and conflict, alcohol and drug use
in relationships, and anger management issues.
Relationships problems at school or work can also be explored so
that you can see possible ideas, options and solutions.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT)
– Counselling is useful for exploring thoughts and feelings
specifically related to LGBT concerns.
Sexual identity questions, coming out and the impact of homophobia
can be explored in an open and respectful environment. Through counselling
you can look at what your relationship expectations are and how
to achieve what you want and need. Individual and couple relationship
counselling can help with communication and sorting out feeling
alone or misunderstood. Dynamics of abuse can also be looked at
with a unique lens that is specific to LGBT relationships.
Fertility issues - Anyone facing fertility issues has stumbled upon the new “f” word. Suddenly you have begun a crash-course in the medical terminology surrounding conception. This can become overwhelming and stressful. Relationships and finances may be maxed-out, and this could just be the beginning. Experiencing a miscarriage is a loss. Many people need to grieve this loss, but lack places in their lives that allow for these experiences to be shared in a respectful and understanding way. Guilt, blame, anger and sadness are feelings that can be processed so that you can feel strong on your feet again. The desire to become a parent and the difficulties in becoming a parent can be explored in counselling so that you can feel a renewed sense of clarity and empowerment. This can help you decide between your options to find the answers that are ultimately right for you.
LGBT clients often have specific issues. Whether you are just beginning discussions with your partner or want to inseminate on your own, talking over your ideas to increase clarity may be useful in helping take the next steps. If you are in the middle of increasing fertility frustrations or dealing with heterosexual clinics / policies, counselling can help sort out what feels right to you. Sometimes the decisions and tasks seem daunting and take away from your initial vision. You may also want to explore your feelings about single parenting or co-parenting. Creating healthy families as an individual or with a partner or within a community is a lot of work, but do-able!
Health and Wellness –
This includes the whole you – physical, emotional, mental
and spiritual. How are you feeling and thinking about stress? Do
you have concerns of depression or anxiety? Is a profound loss affecting
your current relationships and no one understands? Do you feel tired
all of the time or a lack of energy to do the things you even like
to do? Do you feel like small things are becoming big things? Have
you noticed a change in your eating or sleeping habits? Counselling
is an opportunity to spend some time exploring what this means to
you.
Children and Youth –
Children and youth face a variety of challenges growing up. With advancing technology such as the internet, it is sometimes difficult for parents to sort-out growing-pains versus on-going and increasing problems. Bullying, questioning sexuality, sexual exploitation and drugs and alcohol are concerns young people would benefit from talking about with an objective, and holistic counsellor.
Children & youth who have been sexually abuse or violated sometimes require counselling or play therapy to sort through their feelings of fear, "dirtiness" trust, guilt, and anger. It is important to re-establish healthy sexual boundaries and to work through these issues to create the ground work for future health relationships. Youth who have experienced sexual violation may have difficulty sharing their experience. They may only want to talk with a professional who has knowledge and understanding of how to move from being a victim to a survivor and to having personal choice again. Counselling is also useful for the prevention of sexual abuse by helping children learn about boundaries and what to do in difficult situations.
Women’s concerns –
Women encounter a number of specific concerns which would benefit
from individual attention and support, in a non-judgmental, feminist
outlook. A guiding hand is offered through counselling to learn
about the bigger picture and how it affects you as a woman. You
choose how to explore your relationship to your body, your significant
other, your family of origin, your children, your spirituality and
being female.
Travel – Traveling or working abroad and need to talk to
someone?
- Traveling and working abroad is stressful with unique
challenges.
- Traveling alone or with a partner can be taxing
to say the least!
- Are events happening at home and you’re
not sure what to do?
Debrief experiences and make decisions in a non-judgmental environment. Talk with someone who understands traveling experiences and receive support for the choices you make.

Critical Incident Stress
Management
CISM is a type of counselling service that can help decrease the
effects of trauma and get you back to your regular life. Debriefings
are available for individual and group processes.
A critical incident is a shock to our psychological system from
an event to which we are sometimes left feeling helpless, emotional
and physical distress and it can feel incomprehensible. The potential
causes of critical incidents include, but are not limited to, actual
or perceived threat to your life, sever physical harm or injury,
witnessing an unpleasant event such as a car accident or harm to
a child, and/or threat or loss of your personal or professional
integrity.
